I was in charge of designing and implementing a live telemetry system to be stowed on board of the BYU Rocketry High Power Team's Spaceport 2023 competition vehicle, Solitude. After the system was created and used over the course of 2 flights, I wrote a paper about its performance and submitted it to the International Telemetry Conference (ITC) in 2023. At this conference, the paper received the "Best Undergraduate Paper" award.
ABSTRACT
This paper describes the telemetry system for a Level 3 amateur rocket. The transmitter is based on a Holybro Sik Radio operating in the 900 MHz band. The telemetry receiver is composed of a directional Yagi antenna, and another Holybro Sik Radio. The telemetry package measured yaw, pitch, roll, velocity, acceleration, and altitude. The rocket was launched on June 21st, 2023. The results show we were able to maintain the telemetry link up to the apogee of 10,000 ft.
